In 2007 Em. Prof. Dr. Johan Swinnen gave me my very first book project. He showed interest in my creativity from day one I met him. I consider him as a very important person in my career as a graphic designer.
He’s an academic, art critic and writer who studied photography and cultural sciences and graduated in the art sciences. He’s also the founder and former director of the Higher Institute of Fine Arts (HISK) in Belgium, emeritus professor at the School of Arts of the AP Hogeschool Antwerpen and used to teach at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel and the Université Sorbonne. During his 40 years of international academic experience as professor of photography sciences he’s written many books where I was able to design a few of them.
In May his first novel 'Happening' will appear. The book tells the story of the fire at Innovation in Brussels, built by the great Art Nouveau architect, Victor Horta in 1901. The Innovation department store was destroyed by a fire in 1967 in which 325 people were killed in less than half an hour. At the time there was an American promotion running. The tragedy led to new safety regulations and a new architecture for public buildings. It is said that it was to wipe out the memory of this disaster that the company remarketed itself as "Inno".
I realize how important this book is to him and I am very happy and honored he asked me to design the cover.

This is my poster contribution for Nrmal (music) festival in Mexico City taking place on 11-12/03. They curated a list of 30 graphic artists in order to collaborate in a poster exhibition that will be held during the festival, focused on international designers with a strong approach to experimentation and a very personal insight of design.
They invited me to design one of the 30 artworks that will shape the exhibition.

In March this year I was asked to develop a logo and illustrative identity for the new city architect of Ghent (‘stadsbouwmeester’), Peter Vanden Abeele and assist him as a designer as well for the coming 6 years. Together with Lisa Stubbe (design), Levi Lanser (visual research) and Olmo Peeters (architecture photography) I worked on this project. Aside from some limitations (use of typography and colors of City of Ghent identity) we are happy to show what we created. The logo and some first illustrations to show how SBMG will work. Many more illustrations are in the making and a nice campaign image as well. This project has good energy, good people!

Life is the coexistence of all opposite values. Joy and sorrow, pleasure and pain, up and down, hot and cold, here and there, light and darkness, birth and death. All experience is by contrast, and one would be meaningless without the other.

When living in New York, my favorite bookshop called McNally Jackson, had this new Book Espresso Machine where you could print your own book. I decided to do so and created the first version of These 5 Years (in black and white), a small book with space for thoughts and humour that makes you think about the next 5 years in your life. In these times of the digital, the throw-away, the instant, it feels like we are missing out on permanence. Five years on paper has weight, a slowness and simplicity. Back in Belgium, I found a publisher interested in the book and six months later, the second version (two colors) was published.
The black and white edition is still available at McNally Jackson.
The color version is available in most bookshops in Antwerp, Ghent, Brussels, Leuven in Belgium. For more info about points of sale: Exhibitions International. (2012)

The Tanakh, the Bible and the Qur'an are 'sacred' books known throughout the world and with a history dating back over centuries. Today these books are still as elemental and significant as they ever were. They are at the heart of religious life for Jews, Christians and Muslims.
This richly illustrated catalogue discusses the structure and content of Tanakh, Bible and Qur'an and explains how these books function in religious practice and study. (2014)
