Three different artists had to dig into the Nike and Dazed archives, reimagining the past to create the future. The result is 'Issue Zero', a digital magazine that showcases three different approaches to one journey, taking inspiration from existing materials to imagine the new. Dazed and Nike joined forces to find new, sustainable ways to create art, by sharing resources and digging through existing materials, inspired by Nike's “Move To Zero” ethos.
While browsing through the Nike archive I found myself zooming in on the printed raster of the scan. Something I find so beautiful, to see the touch of the ink on the paper and see the age. All these dots together forming one full image. When thinking about an online raster, you can look at a pixel as being circular in a way. Impossible amounts of designs can come out of this. This brought me to the fact that, as a designer, I often think in ISO 216 terms. This growing and dividing concept is really appealing to me. I have always been fascinated by the Fibonacci sequence in nature. From one small element we get these amazing complex multiplying forms that can go on forever.
This is a multifunctional publication, something large that can be reduced to something small and vice versa. By zooming in on the Nike archive (old) and combining it with contemporary typography (new) new images have been created that can be seen as posters but at the same time they are very multifunctional: you can transform the publication in a new one by combining posters or cut up posters into smaller pieces. Nothing goes to waste in this design. Every element can stand on its own and yet everything together is a whole. Old and new side by side, history and the ‘now’ go hand in hand. Pixels meet rasters and become friends.

Art direction, design and illustrations by the lovely and most talented women from @allthewaytoparis.
The book reflects on 1616 / arita japans’ rich 400-year history of craftsmanship and how it has been brought into the contemporary design scene by @momotanoriyuki in close collaboration with Creative Director and Designer @teruhiroyanagihara.
The collection of 1616 / arita japan is presented in its full and the porcelain makers are portrayed.
My part in it? As a chapter 16 artists from different fields were invited to give their personal views on a chosen plate by 1616 / arita japan. I was invited by @allethewaytoparis to contribute. This was in 2019! The brief: “For “16 People, 16 Plates” we kindly ask you to describe your perfect thing/things/food/idea to put on the plate. Your contribution can be a photo, a text, an illustration…”. They sent me 2 beautiful 1616 / arita Japan plates and I put them on the table for a while, to look at and get inspired by. One morning I noticed dried flower petals on the plate, coming from a bouquet I received weeks earlier on February 19, my birthday–this made me think about life and death. I thought about the random order the petals had on the plate, compared to the spiral pattern they have when being ‘alive’. Realizing this could be an accidental symbol of the universe on my plate, I scanned the combination of petals and plate and suddenly I saw the flower shape in the plate, leading me to think about Fibonacci.

New campaign poster for upcoming Masters Expo 2023 @royalacademyantwerp
During the Spring workshop week last May at @ecal_ch I met @vincentschwenk and totally loved his work. So when @rauch_offspace asked me to submit a design for their upcoming experimental poster exhibition in August I immediately thought it would be interesting to ask Vincent to join. I have no experience with 3D and it’s a whole different world.
As we are both fans of nature we quickly came up with the topic of mushrooms and especially the interesting connections of fungus roots - mycelium. The motto was "Everything is connected underneath the surface”. We ping-ponged back and forth between flat graphic design and 3D and I think the outcome is something totally unexpected.
This poster is a visualization of the organic network called mycelium that lies beneath the soil and connects individual plants to transfer water, nitrogen, carbon and other minerals.
There are many layers to discover in this work. The base layer is a flat shape inspired by the stringy substance of mycelium. In addition, you see some mushroom shapes that float through a strong, almost technical 3D shape, a glass representation of mycelium.
If you look closely, you can see the entire poster reflecting off the glass. Similarly, everything in this poster is connected – organic elements with mechanical surfaces and textures.
This is perhaps a good description of the collaboration, as Vincent's specialty is creating exciting new 3D textures, while mine is more focused on flat, organic yet structured shapes.
The exhibition is expected to be on display from 25th August to 22nd September 2023.

According to him, these numbers represent the paths through which energy and information manifest themselves to form the material world, attributing them to a superior consciousness in comparison to the others. My design for Our Sister has a main focus on 3,6,9 and might become your lucky garment. 🫣 A frequency untold, a gateway to unfold … Everyone needs a spiritual accountant! 😘🤍🤍🤍👋🏻🫶🏻

One of my old (first project goes back to 2018) and favorite clients, @parkstudio_la, are working on creating an online course for how to use the program called AutoCAD. As they were making the course, they were thinking about the favorite commands they use in the program, so they decided to launch merch when they launch the course. As always, working with Jolene is fun and to the point. Even though they are based in Dallas, our communication is always so quick and efficient! Can’t wait to see these designs come alive on bags, mugs and who knows what else. 🖤

Hmmm, it seems that projects related to 'connectivity' come my way often these days. And in this case I literally connected all the posters together.
I was happy to design a couple of posters and small reader for the Architecture department of the University of Luxemburg in Autumn 2023. That semester @zdravo.marija, @cerreyes and @davidpeleman are launching a design studio "Worlding Soils. Caring for Soil Communities in Minett" at the @master.arch.lu.
The design studio centers soil—a system commonly overlooked in architectural discussion and representation—as its subject, matter, and site for the analysis of histories and presents of capitalist extraction, as well as a projection of solidary and shared futures of co-existence. Understanding underground not only as a passive recipient of political, economic, and social processes coming from above, but as a space of resistance, as “somewhere to (dig and) plot,” to quote Kathryn Yusoff, the studio will position soil beyond its resourcefulness and productivity for humans, trying instead to think what would it mean to test practices of care and repair in building soil communities and enabling interdependencies between all those who share the condition of life in the ruins of capitalist extraction?
The studio will be accompanied by a stellar public lecture series with four amazing guests, including Mio Tsuneyama @miotsuneyama, Paulo Tavares @pauloxtavares, Maria Puig de la Bellacasa @m.puigbellacasa and Marina Otero Verzier, taking place at @lucacenterforarchitecture throughout the course of the semester.

Have you ever heard ‘The Lark Ascending’ by Vaughan Williams? I did and it brought me to tears when first listening to it (headphones). It’s romantic and dramatic and very fragile to me, just like the Romie typeface and the story behind the composition is also beautiful.

Digital portfolio book for #sigridadriaenssens. I met this wonderful human during my time in the USA in 2009. Until today I am still delighted whenever she asks me for design-help. She is currently Associate Professor at the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) at Princeton University (PU) and also an affiliate Faculty member of PU School of Architecture. She runs @formfindinglab in Princeton too. A very smart multitalented woman!
I see a garden full of vibrant colors of flowers in bloom but very very few bees. 🐝 In Flanders, 1 in 4 bee colonies died last winter. Beekeepers who have been taking care of their bee colonies in the same way for years are suddenly confronted with dead bee colonies. The causes of bee mortality are complex and not always easy to identify. In any case, there is a need for new and modern beekeeping techniques to make bee colonies more resistant to changed climatic conditions, the impoverishment of the Flemish landscape, the varroa mite and advancing predators such as the Asian hornet. The drought in the summer of 2022 led, among other things, to a limited food supply for bees. Plants produced less nectar and bees could collect less pollen. The lack of pollen in the summer in particular is detrimental to a bee colony preparing for winter. The beekeeper plays an important role in the survival of the bee colonies. 🐝
I'm planning to do a beekeeper course next year because graphic design isn't going to save the world 😂 … Not that I can save the world, on the contrary, but nature is so important to me that I decided to do something extra. 🤍🐝 I will keep designing for 100% ❤️ but I'm going to walk an extra small path at the same time.

This is the cover for the new book by @bulkarchitecten. It’s been almost 1,5 years in the making.
A lot of things have been changed along the way – certainly since there was an exhibition first that guided us towards new insights for the book design. The cover is a word play. The main title ‘room for change’ pushes the subtitle away while there is a shift happening as well on that second level. Room for air, for thoughts but also windows and entrances.
In 2019 Bulk architects received a Bouwmeester label for their research into robust open buildings as the key to a more resilient city. This resulted in the ‘Construct, room for change’ exhibition (until April 17 in @desingelartscentre) and the book 'Room for change. Robust open buildings for the future'.
Based on a curiosity about history and future possibilities, ‘Room for change. Robust open buildings for the future' contributes to the convergence between architecture, structure and sustainability.
The book is available from 13.04.2022. Pre-order possible. For the launch of the book, @stephengeoffreybates (Sergison Bates architects) and Koen Van Bockstal (Bulk architects / University of Antwerp) are invited by the Flanders Architecture Institute and the University of Antwerp for a double lecture. @rujapress invited me to be part of this project which will become a publication and an exhibition in Rotterdam, beginning 2021.
99 artists were invited and received a map. This doodle map is unique and it is generated by a computer. They wanted us to take it as a prompt, as the starting point of a game in relation with a place.
I perceived the map as very jumpy and playful. I saw the form of a fence and this lead me to the common pangram 'The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog’. I felt like connecting the dots and lines and see what would appear. I took the map as a starting point to draw all letters from alphabet.

Billboard up in Ghent! 🖤🌷Thanks to 019 and Design Museum Gent. On view until October 1, 2020 in Drabstraat, Ghent (Belgium).
Title of my work: Location does not matter.
This pattern consists of several illustrations of houses based on some of my drawings when I was a child. As a symbol of the many places where I have lived, they were strongly compressed to emphasize the full feeling. The whole becomes very abstract from a distance, almost a haze - the depth disappears, just as memories of the details of the houses gradually disappear and only an atmosphere remains. 🌬
This billboard is a collaboration between Design museum Gent and 019. It functions as an alternative exhibition platform for (graphic) designers. A leftover from the Museum Of Moving Practice project that happened between the 18th of May and the 17th of September 2017, where 019 temporary occupied a part of the museum. This billboard is a copy of the Billboard Series framework that has been hanging at 019 since September 2015. (A project by Artlead, All Things Contemporary Vzw & 019)
Each billboard stays up for two months.

A form of (graphic) support for Brussels venue Atelier 210, designed together with Nanna Reseke. We were happy to contribute to LIVE2020 (the fund that supports the entire music sector). All proceeds of this t-shirt will go entirely to Supportlive2020. Other designers who designed t-shirts were Stromae (AB), Willy Vanderperre (Trix).
The lines of the façade of the Atelier 210 building inspired us and we came to a new sleek yet playful shape that represents the letter A and the numbers 210. Furthermore, we focused on the numbers: 2 + 1 + 0 = 3: In numerology, life path number 3 is a strong vibration, one of creative self-expression, independence, playfulness, and communication. People with Life Path Number 3 have a very high level of creativity and self-expression. We found that applicable to a venue like Atelier 210. Or as De La Soul sang: 3 is the magic number! 🎶🎵

Super excited to share what I have designed for the Dazed poster project that communicates messages created in response to the changes that COVID-19 has brought to lives worldwide, promoting reflections of the now, positive future narratives and new ideas. Dazed called on its community of artists, musicians and designers to create artworks that inspire and imagine the possibility of new worlds, explore humanity in the present climate, and demonstrate the power of art as a medium for political message.
My poster is called Satori: a Japanese Buddhist term for awakening—the acquiring of a new point of view in our dealings with life and the world. Now more than ever I am aware of rural borders, since these have been closed in Belgium due to Corona. Freedom is no longer about physical movement, but has to take place in your head. I did not want to create borders for myself for this design, so I decided I would allow my intuitive side to take over. It became a smiling face that is embraced by a comforting organic form that has a similar smile. As if I drew my soul that wants to still my thoughts. These shapes stand together and yet alone: an answer that can be given to the old Dazed slogan ‘how does it make you feel’ in these weird times.
As part of the campaign, Dazed Media has partnered with BartsCharity, who support the work of staff at the Barts Health NHS Trust, who are on the frontline of the COVID-19 outbreak. They are raising emergency funds to help staff cope with the challenges they’re facing everyday.

My poster TIJD (time) was part of an exhibition ARBEITEN in may 2021 at Spoiler in Berlin. The 1st of May is about taking ‘time’ off to reflect on work. As a self-employed designer, time for me is client / deadline related. It’s often not a number that comes from myself. If I work on self-initiated projects, time does not exist. I made this poster while there was ’no time’. The text on my poster is a dutch word-play. Translated into English it would say ’Times does not exists, it flows’ but literally translated it is: ‘Time does not stand, it flows’. Only Dutch people will understand :) The illustration is a reference to a clock where the most important numbers float around, disappear and interact.

These are some of the results of the workshop called ‘Read Me’ I gave in November 2021 during the Google VISD Summit by Google Design.
A short hour where participants received a folder with a selection of typefaces, color swatches and guidelines so they could create a simple typographic poster in Indesign using all kind of treatments. They also had to collaborate in pairs on their design. Minimum input, maximum output! From the 23 typefaces they picked Terminal Grotesque, Selva Scrip, Editioral New, Mineral Solid and Millionaire.
For the cover I used all designs on top of each other. Wondering what could have been done in one day with this workshop though … many more layers and collaborations could lead to something super vibrant!

The Elusive Archive is a project in collaboration with Levi Lanser for The New Masters, a project by Dift for Bienale Interieur 2018, Kortrijk.
We were asked to re-interpret the printed archive (over 300 magazines and newspapers) of the 50 year old Biennale Interieur.
We wanted to (re)shape, (re)interpret, (re)invent the given archive by simply publishing actual scans coming from the publications.
We wanted to approach a rational content in an intuitive way, with just a couple of parameters to get us started. We didn’t know in what this would result, therefore we called this our elusive archive.
Elusive — meaning difficult to find, catch, or achieve.
When we talk about archiving, we often think about organizing and structure. But mostly, people think about using the brain, the reasoning to do this.
Archiving isn’t exactly connotated with intuition, since this is the ability to understand something instinctively, without the need for conscious reasoning.
These were our paramaters:
1. Intuitive action (Picking the magazine)
2. Structured action (Setting the timeframe)
3. Structured action (The 3 Scans)
4. Intuitive action (The personal Scan)
With the content we gathered, we created this publication. There are 40 posters, so the archive can be shown in a page/poster per page/poster way or as a whole. This publication is based on the following system: The cover has a full list of the used magazines. We provide the following info per scan: name of magazine, publishing date and the type of content (inside, cover or spine). We also made some illustrations based upon interior objects or forms and shapes we’ve found in our selection. In the middle you can read a long email conversation between us about archiving. The original archive and our work is shown during the Biënnale (18 - 22 October) and until 4 November 2018. It’s a printed edition of 300 by @stockmansinspiredby on Munken Print White 150 g.
In 2018, Bressers Architects (Ghent, Belgium) contacted me to develop a 2 identities. One for the Bressers Erfgoed (the heritage department) and one for BLAD (their architecture lab). Bressers Architecten is specialized in restoration, conservation, renovation and contemporary architecture. The icon for the heritage part, Bressers Erfgoed, refers to the B, a (re) construction and a floor plan. The combination of the serif and sans serif type refers to the combination of past and present and detail and minimalism. The logo for BLAD is constructive and a bit kinetic. Website by Studio RGB.

Together with Ferdinando Verderi and Piera Wolf I worked on this amazing book for and written by Jefferson Hack.
Jefferson Hack is renown for his innovative vision on journalism, film, photography, television and digital media. He co-founded British fashion/culture magazines Dazed and Confused, Another Magazine, Another Man as well as their digital versions. Today he proposes this new publication in order to re-define the purpose of alternative media in the digital age, illustrating how a transdisciplinary approach can break the conventional mold of a magazine into a modern experience. Contains contributions by Hans Ulrich Obrist, Björk, Tilda Swinton, Rankin, Kate Moss, U2, Thom Yorke. This publication seeks to share methodologies and inspire creatives, suggesting anti-formula processes that can be adopted to define the future of publishing and communication. This is a numbered edition of 5000 copies, each cope presents a personal cover.

My time as a student at @royalacademyantwerp is one that I will never forget. 🙃 It was the first time that I got into a large creative pool that has shaped me into the designer I am today. So when @plusoffice_architects and @omgeving.be asked me if I wanted to design the Spatial Masterplan Mustaard Campus Antwerp publication, I was very delighted!
In March 2020, at the start of the first lockdown, I started the assignment. I was still teaching at the Academy, but of course those lessons only took place online and I missed the building itself. That is why this assignment was extra nice because it guided me through the future plans of one of the most creative institutions in Antwerp. Pretty soon I got @nannareseke involved but only in November 2020 we were able to complete it. The form of the publication will be very basic due to a small budget: square perforations and black wire-o with a cover that is double: you can open it and study the large Nolli plan. This form is a small reference to the typical school course books. Printed by @diekeureprinting

The exhibition itself follows the theme of a garden and is scenographically set up to resemble a living garden with paths going through the Wintertuin.

Identity for Clement Blanchet Architecture. Clément Blanchet is Principle of Clément Blanchet Architecture (CBA) and a former Associate of the Office for Metropolitan Architecture (OMA), where he joined in 2004.
Clément Blanchet Architecture (CBA) is an innovative architecture and urban design practice that brings together multidisciplinary and multicultural actors on themes around the city, architecture and all media related to it. The firm approaches the design of architecture, infrastructure and the city as necessarily interrelated, and in negotiation with planning, development and public space. This complexity is not a constraint but a project tool to reveal solutions that possess potential simplicity, clarity and unity.
CBA was founded with a mandate to rethink architecture and urbanism as a way to better solve, read and represent the city; to find new meaning for the architecture of the city as a durable and enduring urban project. In many competition-winning designs, originality is found in the beauty of the ordinary.

Identity for new Italian-German #knitwear label @maddalena_annunziata. Many items of her collection can be worn inside out, so we decided upon a label that will be a loop in the neckline showing all details of the product as well. In general there is a big focus on lines in the garments (fabric and cut) which we try to emphasize in the #graphic identity. Designed in 2019.
Poster about finding a balance between trust and thruth in these times. I am trying to only read the news once a week to avoid ‘mind attacks’. From tomorrow on, shops open again in Belgium and while it is a positive thing for the economy, I find it hard to start participating in that world again. Going to crowded places or shops freaks me out. I try to buy online as much as possible from local shops.
In some situations in the supermarkets it feels like the virus does not exists, people already act ‘normal’ again and forget to keep distance and in other situations you feel the unseen anxiety. When I am out in nature, where there’s no people around, it feels like we live in a bubble in the city. And then I wonder about how much anxiety we are getting ‘fed’ by news. And how much we need to trust our government, how much we rely on them telling us the truth. There’s a part of the North of Antwerp that they did not speak about (about how many patients there were) and that only popped up now. It drives me crazy. Eckhard Tolle wrote: ‘Accept - then act. Whatever the present moment contains, accept it as if you had chosen it. Always work with it, not against it.’ helps me live in the now and not worry about the future. Ace & Tate asked me to design a mural for their latest shop in Bruges. I got inspired by the house facades in the city. Designed in 2019.

Some snippets of a lecture that I designed for and put together with Sigrid Adriaenssens (PhD—Associate Professor Civil and Environmental Engineering, @princeton @formfindinglab ) about the transformation and geometry in architect #annetyng ’s work! This was part of the ‘2020 Women in Design and Architecture Conference’ at @princetonarchitecture. The work Sigrid presented, arose out of a conversation we had. We are also working on a publication that will be published later.
About the 2020 Women in Design and Architecture Conference
This annual conference celebrates the work and legacy of a pivotal female #architect or #designer with contributions from international historians and scholars, in addition to artists, curators, and practitioners. This year was about Anne Tyng. (#notamuse) Through independent projects, in addition to her work with architects #LouisKahn and #PierLuigiNervi, Tyng explored #geometry as it relates to natural form and construction. She approached design as a process and profession through teaching and writing, addressing the social, psychological, and experiential dynamics of creativity and collaboration; her work has influenced other practitioners as well as models of practice.

A book I designed for and co-edited with my good friend Mads Teglers for sale via Antenne books in the UK. It’s a photo series of/with Louise Cehofski.
For my late grandfather Maurice Specht (6 Jan 2006) — the title of an old Dutch song by Ramses Shaffy meaning ‘sing, fight, cry, pray, laugh, work and admire’. It was played on his funeral and represents really everything he stood for. I choose this typeface in combination with the grey because it reminds me of a tombstone.

New book for Plusoffice architects published by Public Space. ‘Dorpen na betonstop’ means ‘villages after concrete stop’. In the ‘century of the city’, countryside and village are often forgotten and disappearing from the sight of the planners. Yet here are important tasks. The Image Quality Plan that Plusoffice architects designed for the municipality of Nijlen formulates clear recipes for a renewed future of the village in Flanders. Many questions were asked: How does a Flemish village look like after the concrete stop? How do we organize the compaction? Where can we soften? How do we introduce new forms of mobility? How do we strengthen the identity of the village?

Together with 88888 I worked on a project for Architecture Workroom Brussels and City of Torhout: 'Torhout in Zicht' (meaning Torhout in sight).
The project contains a walk through the city, designed by Office88888 and a booklet created by myself. White abstract planes are part of a series of interventions in combination with photos by Marie-Francoise Plissart, offering new perspectives on the city landscape.
Office88888's scenography inspired me to design the booklet that comes with the walk: the cover is all white with embossed letters and 1 (brick) color.
An ode to my favorite book (A New Earth) by Eckhart Tolle. Every day I wake up with this hope for a general awakening of humanity and that often feels so naive, 🧝🏻♀️ but I rather live in that kind of ‘bubble’ than to allow the fears and negativity in my head and body. Read the book and you know what I mean.

Come and see the first steps of a new generation of visual artists and designers from the @royalacademyantwerp! From Thursday 23 to Sunday 26 June, the Antwerp Academy welcomes you to our Masters Expo 2022, (MA22) where you can discover the graduation works of our new batch of artists.
The master's year is a radical and intense period for every student and determines the start of their early artistic career. All the graduation works will be on display in the exhibition, in the presence of the 80 masters from all departments.
